First In The U.S. Elver Factory Being Built in Waldoboro

Big things are happening in Waldoboro with a new 10 million dollar facility being built there for American Unagi which is a aquaculture company that will focus the new 27,000 foot building on cultivating eels, that’s right locally sourced, Maine grown eels.

The new building will be responsible for producing close to 5% of the United States eel market, which equates to about ½ million pounds a year. The main market for American Unagi is restaurants and food distributors according to report by Mainebiz.com.

This will be the first and only facility in the U.S. to grow Maine eels to full market size. The company hopes to have the facility built and operational by the start of Maine elver season in the spring of 2022.

The tie in to Maine elvers will give Mainers another market to sell the glass eels to. American Unagi says they will likely purchase around 600 pounds on the glass eels yearly and grow the eels to maturity. They also plan to offer butterflied fillets and ready to eat smoked eel. There is also a live eel market that American Unagi will serve as well.

The opening of this new aquaculture facility is also expected to create around 14 local jobs in Waldoboro.

There had been concerns producing eels sustainably and some questions regarding the accountability in the market and that positions American Unagi to spearhead and deliver a resource that has been largely overlooked in the seafood market
