Very Few Maine Residents Have Their Real IDs
Despite knowing that Real ID was coming for literally decades, we have been slow to adopt it here in Maine.
Believe it or not, the Real ID Act was signed into law in 2005. Yes, it has been around for 20 years! Some say that the basic concept for the act dates back to the late 1990s and that the concept was brought back in the wake of the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
The reason for Real ID is to make sure that when an ID (like a driver's license) is issued, there are standards for the information that is required to get that identification. Basically, to prevent the required info from varying state-to-state.
The WABI article says it was meant to:
set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses
How Many Mainers Have Their Real IDs?
Despite the fact that we have known about the upcoming requirement for years, and the fact that the deadline has been pushed back numerous times, only 29% of Mainers have their Real IDs.
At this point, I still don't have mine. It was an option when I was renewing my license the last time, but I decided not to get it because of was concerned about how long it was going to take to fill out the paperwork. After waiting at the DMV for a significant amount of time, I needed to get back to work.
I suspect that the reason why so few Mainers have gotten their Real IDs is that many people don't see a need to take the time to get one. If you are not planning on visiting a federal facility or take a commercial airline flight, there's no good reason to get yours.
Is it time to get yours? According to the Maine.gov site, here's what you need:
- One document that establishes identity, date of birth, and proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence, or other lawful status in the U.S.
- Social Security Number (card not required) or evidence of Social Security Number ineligibility.
- Two documents to establish proof of residence in the State of Maine, such as a utility bill and mortgage statement (P.O. Box is not acceptable).
Do you have yours? If not, do you mind sharing why? We're curious. Feel free to send us a message in our app.
