Today is Popcorn Day. Popcorn dates back to the mid 1800’s when it became a favorite late-night snack in front of a fire, at picnics and at social gatherings.

Charles Cretors, a Chicago candy store owner made the first popcorn-popping machine. The machine was powered by steam and was good for popping popcorn and roasting peanuts.

Jiffy Pop popcorn made its debut in the 1970’s. (See the original commercial below)

The first microwave popcorn was made by General Mills in 1981 which made home popcorn sales increase by tens of thousands of pounds per year.

Today Americans eat about a million pounds of popcorn a year.
