For decades, one of the most recognizable buildings in Central Maine was home to Lawry Brothers Funeral Home.

Originally known as the Keyes Mansion, the building at 107 Main Street in Fairfield was purchased by the Lawry brothers in 1930.  While it changed hands several times, the business operated from that Main Street location for nearly a century.  While the business is still around, as part of Veilleux-Redington-Lawry Brothers, the iconic 'castle' closed down earlier in 2024.

Now, it looks like the old 'castle' will be getting a new lease on life.

According to an article in the KJ, Casella Waste Systems has purchased the building and plans to use it as an office space.

The article explains that they will tear down the addition, which was reportedly built sometime around 1980, and restore the original portion of the building.

The business currently has offices near the former Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, but they have outgrown that space.  Additionally, earlier this year, the company tore down a series of long-vacant buildings on the same stretch of street in order to expand the company's employee parking.

Located in Vermont, the company claims on its website that it recycles approximately 1.4 million tons of waste each year. Committed to the communities they serve, the company's employees volunteer a total of 14,000 hours annually.

The company was started in the mid-1970s by brothers Doug and John Casella.  You can read more about their story HERE.
