Nearly all of us, since we were small children, have been told over and over that trash needs to go in the proper place.  If you ask almost any kid where trash goes, they won't hesitate to tell you that trash needs to go in a garbage can.

So, why then, is it so hard for some people to understand that they need to throw garbage away?

Apparently, one Lewiston found is so clogged with trash that it needed to be turned off.

According to WGME, the fountain at Dufresne Plaza was so filled with cigarette butts, packaging from snacks, and other trash that the fountain's drains were so clogged that the fountain needed to be temporarily shut down.

City of Lewiston public works staff cleaned the trash from the fountains and, by Tuesday afternoon, the water was flowing once again.

Located in downtown Lewiston, between Park Street and Lisbon Street, the plaza is a relaxing space tucked in between the buildings of the former mill city.  In the WGME article, one person commented that the sound of the fountains does a great job of blocking out the noise of the nearby traffic.

Hopefully, now that the fountain has been cleaned out, people will be more respectful of the space and put their trash where it belongs.  In most Maine towns and cities, trash cans and recycling bins are literally everywhere.  There is no reason to throw garbage and cigarette butts in a fountain.  Okay?  Good, glad we understand each other!
