Maine State Trooper Uses Cruiser to Stop Allegedly Intoxicated, Wrong-Way Driver on I-95
A Freeport, Maine, man is in custody following a terrifying incident that took place in Aroostook County early Tuesday morning.
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, at about midnight on Tuesday, November 19, Maine State Police troopers got word of a wrong-way driver near mile marker 266 on the I-95.
The vehicle was reportedly traveling north in the southbound lane.
The press release goes on to say:
Trooper Noah Castonguay responded and attempted to stop the vehicle, a 2019 Honda Accord, at Mile Marker 281 with his lights and siren activated in the roadway facing the oncoming vehicle. The vehicle continued towards Trooper Castonguay. Trooper Castonguay swerved to avoid a head-on collision and the vehicle continued North in the Southbound lane
Trooper Castonguay used a crossover to get to the northbound lane of travel. Proceeding north, he intercepted that driver at mile marker 286 in Oakfield.
Castonguay used his cruiser to strike the vehicle as it passed by the crossover. This caused the wrong-way driver to stop. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
The driver, 75-year-old James Burch, of Freeport, was arrested and taken to the Aroostook County Jail. He faces charges of Criminal OUI, Aggravated Driving to Endanger, and Passing a Roadblock.
