Standish, Maine was first settled in 1750 when the Massachusetts General Court granted the township to Captain Moses Pearson and Captain Humphrey Hobbs, along with their companies, for their service during the French and Indian Wars.

The plan was to name it Pearson and Hobbs Town, but Captain Hobbs died and none of his men claimed the land.  Two years later, in 1752, the area was surveyed and divided into 30-acre lots. Some soldiers held onto their claims, but many sold them off for whatever they could get. Those who stayed found their cabins burned by Native warriors trying to drive them out.

To protect themselves, the settlers built a fort at Standish Corner.  It offered safety until the fighting ended in 1759, after the Fall of Quebec.

The area became known as Pearsontown Plantation and was officially incorporated as the town of Standish on November 30, 1785.  The name honors Captain Myles Standish.
