Mid-Coast Priest Accused of Child Sex Abuse Placed On Leave
According to a press release by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, a Mid-coast Catholic priest has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation related to alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl back in the 1980's
Father Robert Vaillancourt has been serving as the main pastor of the St Brendan the Navigator Parish which includes churches in Camden, Rockland, Islesboro, Belfast, Vinalhaven and North Haven.
The priest has denied the allegation and has indicated he is innocent and will cooperate fully with any investigations.
In the interim, Bishop Deeley who oversees the diocese that Fr. Vaillancourt is assigned to, has been reassigned and appointed Monsignor Paul Stefanko to take charge of the parish until further notice.
According to the press release, an internal investigation is currently underway. The Bishop is encourages anyone that may have any information regarding any sexual abuse of minors by a Church representative to contact your local police department and the Diocese of Portland at 207-321-7836.
