Almost half of American adults have had their personal information exposed by hackers this year. That’s about 110 million adults according to the identity Theft Resource Center. For 12 month period that number is very high.

Each record that is hacked usually includes debt or credit card, your name, address, birthday, password, email, phone number and security questions. This type of thing just happened to me on Thursday of last week, I went to use my debit card to pay a bill online and it was rejected. It was about that same time I got a phone call from my bank telling me they had to cancel my debit card because of fraudulent activity.

It was a known fraud scam from Ireland that was trying access money from my account and because of security measures by the bank they were able to detect the fraud and put a stop on everything. Only thing is I’ve had to order a new debit card and wait for it to arrive. A little price to pay though considering I could have had my account wiped out.

The problem is hacking is growing at an alarming rate and hackers are very focused and teaming up. One problem is outdated software like Windows XP which no longer receives security updates and there was an Internet Explorer flaw recently that allowed hackers to take over your computer. The number of 100 million American adults is a high number but experts believe if you’re not a data breach victim, you just haven’t realized it yet.
