Longtime Augusta, Maine, Firefighter Passes Away Unexpectedly
We are lucky to live in a state that has so many amazing, selfless, first responders.
These brave men and women put their lives on the line each and every day to help others during their darkest times.
Sadly, we have lost a longtime member of the Augusta Fire Department.
According to a post on the Augusta Maine Fire & Rescue Facebook page, Active Duty Member Firefighter Randall "Randy" Lewis passed away.
The post goes on to say:
Randy has dedicated 41 year of service to our department and our community. Randy was the Operator of Engine 2 on B Shift. The passing of our brother has left a hole in the hearts of all in our department. Our hearts and thoughts are with Randy, his family and each other.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Randy Lewis's family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time.
According to the City of Augusta website, the first fire department was formed way back in 1799.
The first firefighters in Augusta were appointed by the board of selectmen and included Elias Craig, Theophilus Hamlen, Amos Bond, Lewis Hamlen, Daniel Hartford, Barnabas Lambard, Shubael Pitts, John Brooks James Child, Perez Hamlen, Charles Gill, Joseph North Jr., Samuel Page, and Church Williams.
Even though the city had purchased a fire engine the typical means for putting out fires were bucket brigades. The men reportedly used leather buckets that were specifically made to carry water.
