Remember When Our Augusta, Maine Radio Studios Were A Music Shop?

Over the years, we have seen a lot of change in downtown Augusta.

In some cases, the same business occupies a spot for many years, but more often, businesses come and go.  Sometimes, what comes after a business closes is a completely different type of business.

For example, a space that was once home to a bank is now a higher end restaurant and a former Hallmark store is now a wood-fired pizza and brewery.

Sometimes, these changes are so incredibly appropriate that it feels like something out of a made-for-TV movie.

Pavlov's Music in Augusta, Maine

The space at 228 Water Street in Augusta is currently home to TownSquare Media Augusta/Waterville.  That's the company that owns popular local radio stations B98.5 and 92 Moose.

We moved into our wonderful new studios in February of 2025.  We love being on Water Street in Augusta.  We are in the heart of it all.

So, what was in our space before we moved in?

Well, for a number of years, this space was home to a retailer that sold rocks, minerals, and crystals.

However, if you go way back, the spot was home to a music shop called Pavlov's Music.  While we can't find much about the place online, it does look like the store, which sold instruments and audio equipment, was around in the early-to-mid 2000s.  There is a Google Maps image from 2007 that shows that the store is open at 228 Water Street.  While we cannot be sure when it closed, there is a MaineBiz article from 2011 that explains that the store had recently closed.

Doesn't it just feel appropriate that the space where a music shop was located is now a radio station?

Over the years, I have spoken with several musicians and DJs who remember buying items from store.  One of the employees of our stations says he can remember buying his first set of powered speakers from the store.
