Colorado resident Scott Jurek set a new world record in hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 46 days, eight hours. That beats the previous record held by Jennifer Pharr Davis by three hours.

The Trail covers 2,189 miles and the unltamarathoner had to overcome injuries and the tough terrain in New England to complete his trek. During the final stretch of his journey he got only 10 hours of sleep over four days and had to fight off knee pain and a muscle tear.

Jurek reached the summit of Mount Katahdin in record time but wasn’t until the final stretch that he knew he was about to break the record. Davis, the previous record holder, tweeted her congradulations with a photo of her hoisting a beer in his honor.
