Massive Snow Drifts Make Major Maine Road Impassible
It has been a few years since Maine had a really snowy winter.
Yes, we have had storms each winter, but they were often smaller and had enough time between them that most of the snow had melted.
This winter has been different. We have had a series of small and medium storms over the last few weeks. Then, over the weekend, we got hammered with a massive storm. While much of Central Maine got just under a foot, Aroostook County got as much as a foot and a half of snow. Limestone, for example, got 16 inches!
When you add gusty winds to the recently fallen snow, it can make for some treacherous driving conditions. In some cases, the wind-driven snow created nearly impassible drifts.

According to a post on the Maine State Police Facebook page, a major Aroostook County road had to be closed for a time on Tuesday.
The post said, in part:
Rte. 1A from Mars Hill and north is currently closed to all traffic due to hazardous road conditions. Much of the road is covered in snow, as pictured here in Easton. For those who live in Aroostook County, please avoid Rte. 1A in this area
As of 3 PM on Tuesday, the Maine State Police were reporting that the road was slowly being re-opened.
The updated post also explained that, due to the amount of snow and the on-going high winds, there was a chance that additional snow drifts could appear.
