Train From Rockland To Brunswick Could Happen This Summer
Train service from Rockland to Brunswick to connect with the Amtrak Downeaster is currently being proposed with service possibly starting as soon as this summer.
According to a report by the Village Soup, Finger Lakes Railway, based in Geneva, N.Y. made the proposal to the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority this week.
The service would run from May through October, with two daily roundtrips. Currently, the plan is to run Fridays-Sunday, with several stops on the Rockland To Brunswick route. The stops proposed would be in Newcastle, Damariscotta, Wiscasset and also Bath, with talks of a possible Waldoboro stop as well.
A representative for Finger Lakes Railway feels that their proposal is different than previous plans to extend rail service to Rockland because they would be using self-propelled rail cars. Each one of the rail cars can carry 80 people, and depending on the demand of the public, they could use one rail car or more, it would all depend on public demand.
At this time, Canadian Pacific has a lease for the 56 mile rail track that runs from Rockland to the Brunswick line. They are in talks with Finger Lakes to reassign the lease to the rail line.
This would be the first time since 1959 that regular rail service to Rockland would be available.
