Over the last few months, we have heard a lot about the efforts to save a historic house located on Western Avenue in Augusta.

According to a Maine Public article from February of 2026, the home was slated for destruction until local businessman Richard Parkhurst stepped in to save the building.  The home, which is over 125 years old, was reported designed by Maine architect John Calvin Stevens.

The Move of the House Through Augusta

According to an alert from the City of Augusta, the house, which is located right next to Kennebec Savings Bank, is set to make its big move on Sunday, May 31, starting at 7 AM

The relocation is expected to take about one to two hours.

Because of the move, Memorial Circle will be completely closed to traffic during that time. Several detours will be in place, so drivers should be prepared for delays.

Memorial Drive and Memorial Bridge will both be closed between the rotaries. Traffic heading south on Water Street near the Hartford Fire Station will be redirected onto Green Street. Southbound traffic on State Street south of Memorial Circle will be detoured onto Capital Street, while southbound traffic north of Memorial Circle will be rerouted onto Green Street. Drivers traveling east on Western Avenue will be directed onto Sewall Street.

If you need to get across the Kennebec River during the closure, city officials recommend using either the Calumet Bridge near Old Fort Western or the Route 3 Cushnoc Crossing Bridge.

If you're planning to be in the area Sunday morning, give yourself some extra time and expect traffic backups while the house makes its journey across Augusta.
