Andy Capwell’s ‘American Idol’ Recap: Top 24 Part Two

The final season of 'American Idol' is trying something new with the top 24 singing a solo song and then a duet with a past American Idol contestant. After the two songs, five of the twelve will be cut. Here's how the night went.

Emily Brooke with Lauren Alaina: They sing Carrie Underwood's 'Flat on the Floor' and I thought it was very well done. Judges really seem to give Emily a lukewarm response.

Thomas Stringfellow with Nick Fradini: They sing 'Man In The Mirror' by Michael Jackson. I thought it was alright, Thomas doesn't have the power or maturity to pull off the song. The judges and young girls love him.

Stephany Negrete with Reuben Studdard: They take on The Carpenters 'Superstar' I really liked it, their voices matched up well. Judges seemed to like it.

Sonika Vaid and Caleb Johnson: 'Skyfall' by Adele. Sonika was excellent. Caleb was a little too over the top for the song. Judges loved it.

Jenna Renae and Scotty McCreery sing Scotty's song 'See You Tonight' The song isn't built to show off the vocal power. It came across as a high school talent show.

La' Porsha Renae and Fantasia: 'Summertime' by Ella Fitzgerald. Diva squared. Some over singing but the judges loved it.

MacKenzie Bourg and Lauren Alaina sing 'I Hope You Dance' Lauren embarrassingly gushes over the teenager. His voice paled in comparison to hers. Judges loved it.

Gianna Isabella and Nick: They sing his song 'Beautiful Life' It was just alright. Judges love her and her mom.

Avalon Young & Rueben: They sing his song 'Flying Without Wings' He was awesome, she was off key. Judges love her? Really?

James VIII and Caleb rock out some Rolling Stones 'Gimmie Shelter' James rocks the guitar but is a dime a dozen singer. Judges kind of liked it.

Jeneve Rose Mitchell and Scotty: Sing 'Gone' by Montgomery Gentry. First thought was this is not the right song. It wasn't, awkward at best. Judges called it bizarre.

Jordan Sasser & Fantasia: Sing her song 'I Believe' She was great, he was alright. His stage presence isn't very good. Judges kind of liked it.

The five going home: Emily, Stephany (bad call), Jenna, James and Jordan.
