Here’s the Latest on the New Augusta, Maine, Apartment Complex
Even though it was a problem before 2020, the housing crisis in Maine has gotten significantly worse over the last few years.
It has gotten to the point that we almost cheer when we hear that a new apartment complex is being built. Sure, the construction of these new, ‘market rate’ apartments will not instantly make it easier to find housing, but it will slowly shift the dynamic. As more apartments and houses become available, we are bound to see rates drop.
Since 2019, it has been discussed that we would see the old building at 99 Western Avenue in Augusta converted into apartments.
It looks like those apartments are very close to being ready for occupancy.
Back in 2019, the plan had been to convert the original building, parts of which date back to 1910, into a series of 52 one-bedroom and studio apartments.
For whatever reason, this is not what ended up happening. In 2023, the original building was demolished to make room for a new building.
As of May 2024, it appears that the complex, developed by Mastway and constructed by Lajoie Brothers, is getting close to being ready for occupancy.
Based on signage on the perimeter fence, it appears that the complex will be managed by Preservation Management. Their website indicates that the place will feature one-bedroom and efficiency apartments.
Features of the complex include a community patio, onsite laundry, indoor bike storage, and 24-hour emergency maintenance.
There is still no word on exactly when people will be able to move into the apartments, but you can get more information and download a rental application HERE.
