According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a 63-year-old Guilford man is dead and a woman remains hospitalized in critical condition following an apparent assault Sunday evening that has now led to a murder charge.

The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Pine Street in Guilford at approximately 7:19 p.m. Sunday, August 16, for a welfare check. Deputies later found two seriously injured adults inside a neighboring residence at 26 Pine Street.

The victims were identified as 63-year-old Brent Doore and an adult female. Both were taken to a hospital, but Doore died from his injuries while being transported. The woman remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North was called in to assist with the investigation and has since taken the lead. The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office remains involved.

An autopsy conducted Monday at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined that Doore died from multiple sharp-force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.

As a result of the investigation, 49-year-old Ryan Carleton of Guilford was arrested by the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office and initially charged with aggravated assault.

During his initial court appearance Tuesday, August 18, at the Piscataquis County Judicial Center, that charge was elevated to murder.

Carleton is being held at the Piscataquis County Jail.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Maine State Police at 207-973-3700, extension 9, and ask for Detective Jacob Ferland.
