An Iconic Maine Mall is Facing a Lawsuit Over a Damaged Sewer Pipe
If you were a teen or young adult in the 1980s or 1990s, you'd probably agree that shopping malls were an essential part of that era's culture.
Malls were not just shopping venues but destinations for entertainment, fashion, and socialization.
Brands like Foot Locker, Hot Topic, and Victoria's Secret became synonymous with mall culture. Additionally, the rise of teen and pop culture icons, who often showcased their lives centered around shopping mall experiences, made these locations even more appealing to visit.
Even though Maine is one of the most rural states in the country, it still had its fair share of shopping malls.
The Turnpike Mall in Augusta, the Auburn Mall, and the Maine Mall in South Portland were just a few of Maine's extremely popular malls from the 1970s through the 2000s.
As a kid of the 1980s and 1990s, I have vivid memories of shopping at the Bangor Mall. Located just off the Hogan Road in Bangor, the mall was filled with iconic stores and eateries.
According to WABI, the City of Bangor has filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Bangor Mall over an improperly maintained sewer pipe.
The article explains that in May 2024, the city contacted the owners of the mall about sinkholes above a stormwater pipe. Apparently, this is an indication that there is a structural problem with the pipe.
The news station reported that according to the lawsuit, the owners of the mall ignored the issue and as a result, the damage eventually led to human waste flowing into the Penjajawoc Stream.

The lawsuit is asking that the mall owners be ordered to pay for the repairs and cleanup, according to WABI.
The news station reported that in addition, it asks that an inspection be done to all sewer and stormwater infrastructure and that a response plan be put in place in case something like this happens again.
This is the second lawsuit brought against the mall this year, according to WABI. The news station said that in October, a lawsuit had been filed over alleged code violations involving the parking lot, roof, and sign.
It appears that the mall is managed by the NAMDAR Realty Group. The company has nearly 400 properties spread across 37 states.
