About the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
According to the Portsmouth Housing website, for more than 225 years, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has played a massive role in American naval history.
Established in 1800, the shipyard built its first warship, the USS Washington, in 1815 and later became a powerhouse for submarine construction and innovation.
It hosted the historic Treaty of Portsmouth in 1905, which ended the Russo-Japanese War and helped earn President Theodore Roosevelt a Nobel Peace Prize. During both World Wars, tens of thousands of civilians worked there building submarines, including groundbreaking vessels like the USS Albacore, whose sleek teardrop hull changed submarine design forever.
Today, the shipyard remains active, employing thousands and operating the nation’s first dry dock, still in use like a giant granite time machine on the Piscataqua River.
