Attention Augusta Parents – Road Work Could Cause Backups On First Day of School

According to a press release from the Augusta School Department, parents and guardians could encounter some traffic delays on the first day of school.

The press release explains that drivers in Augusta should expect delays and changing traffic patterns as students return to school Monday, August 31st.

Road construction is continuing around the city, including near the Cony High School and CATC complex. Cony Road, also known as Route 105 or South Belfast Avenue, and Cony Road Extension are currently being paved.  The work includes one-way traffic, possible traffic signal shutoffs and flaggers directing vehicles through the construction area.

Construction on Bangor Street could also contribute to additional delays, particularly during busy morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods.

The City of Augusta has been working to coordinate construction around school bus pickup and drop-off schedules, but school officials say traffic conditions could still cause schedules to shift.

Drivers are being asked to be patient and allow extra time when traveling through the area, especially during school arrival and dismissal. Motorists should also slow down, follow directions from flaggers and be prepared for changing traffic patterns.

With construction and the first day of school arriving at the same time, officials are reminding drivers to plan ahead and use extra caution around students, buses and increased pedestrian traffic.
