Central Maine Man Charged With Defacing Law Enforcement Memorial

We were all shocked when we heard that, over Memorial Day Weekend, the Maine Law Enforcement Memorial in Augusta had been defaced.  The person responsible had spray painted a message on the memorial.

Now, after a lengthy investigation, we are hearing that police have made an arrest in the case.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, police have arrested 39 year old Justin Larrabee.  An Augusta resident, Larrabee has been charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a Class-C felony.

According to police, Larrabee defaced the memorial in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 28th, 2023.

The press release says, in part:

Following a joint investigation between the Capitol Police and the Augusta Police Department a search warrant was executed at a Riverside Road address in Augusta at approximately 3:00 pm today. The criminal summons was issued for defacing the Memorial and another vandalism incident in the city which took place a few days following the incident at the Capitol complex.

The Maine Law Enforcement Memorial, which pays tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while keeping the residents of Maine safe, is located next to the Maine State House on State Street in Augusta.

Following the arrest, Augusta Police Chief Jared Mills said:

On behalf of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and the Augusta Police, I want to recognize the investigators with the Augusta and Capitol Police for the countless hours they spent to bring this investigation to a successful resolution

So far, there is no word on when Larrabee will be in court.
