Central Maine Power Warning About Aggressive Scammers
Central Maine Power is sounding the alarm as scams across Maine grow more elaborate. Because of this, they are urging customers to stay sharp and skeptical.
According to WCSH 6, the utility issued a warning Thursday, saying scammers are reaching people through phone calls, emails, and even in-person visits where impostors pose as CMP workers. These schemes are often designed to pressure people into handing over personal or financial details.
Mike Morisette, Central Maine Power's Vice President of Customer Service, said criminals are getting more convincing, and customers need to slow down and double-check who they’re dealing with. He advised that if anything feels suspicious, whether it’s a call, message, or someone at the door, people should trust their gut and contact CMP directly at 800-750-4000.
Morisette also explained that CMP will never push customers to share sensitive information or demand payment through unusual methods. He added that anyone with concerns should reach out to the company for confirmation.
CMP reminds customers to verify employee ID badges and look for company-branded vehicles during home visits. The company will never ask to see your bill, request access to your devices, take photos of your account, offer surprise deals at your door, or demand payment through prepaid cards.
Officials also warn about common scams, including threats of immediate disconnection, fake meter upgrade fees, and claims of failed payments used to steal banking information.
