Elderly Maine Man Found Dead in The Water More Than a Mile Away From His Canoe Tuesday

According to WGME 13, the body of a 78-year-old Maine man was pulled from the water on Tuesday following a search after he was reported missing.

WGME reports that 78-year-old, Donald Whipple, went missing sometime on Monday in the northern Maine town of Masardis.

Maine Game Wardens began their search for the elderly man Monday night just before 11:00 pm according to WGME.

According to reports, Whipple had gone out fishing in his canoe on the Aroostook River earlier in the day and hadn't returned back.

Warden's were quickly able to locate Whipple's canoe, but all that was inside of it was his fishing gear. Whipple was nowhere to be found.

WGME reports that the following morning at about 9:40 am, wardens came across Whipple's body in a shallow section of the Aroostook River.

Wardens pulled Whipple's body from about four feet of water on Tuesday morning. His body was found almost a mile down river from where his canoe was initially located the night before.

WGME reports that officials do not believe Whipple's death was suspicious in nature.
