I-95 Maine Crash Kills Two Adults & Injures Four Children
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, a crash on I-95 has left two people dead and injured four children.
The press release explains that, at about 4:30 AM on Wednesday, members of the Maine State Police were called to a serious two vehicle crash on I-95 southbound near mile marker 71 in New Gloucester.
When Troopers got there, they found a 2017 GMC Acadia towing a U-Haul trailer and a 2015 Audi SUV involved in a major collision.
According to the first look at the investigation, the GMC was heading south when the trailer came loose from the trailer ball and stayed connected only by the safety chains. The driver pulled onto the right shoulder and came to a stop, but the trailer was still sticking out into the roadway.
Six people from Lewiston were inside the GMC, including four children between the ages of seven and fourteen.
The adult male driver, an adult female passenger, and two of the kids got out to check on the trailer. While they were trying to deal with the problem, a southbound Audi SUV hit the trailer and the GMC from behind.
The adult female died at the scene. The driver suffered critical injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he later passed away.
The two children who were outside the vehicle had minor injuries. The two who stayed inside the GMC also had minor injuries. All four children were taken to Maine Medical Center.
Police say they are still confirming family details, and names will be released once everything is verified and next of kin are notified.
The Audi’s driver, a man from Wales, had minor injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center. He was treated and released. Police say there are no charges against him at this time.
The crash remains under active investigation.
Maine State Police thanked Gray Fire and Rescue, Auburn Fire and Rescue, the Auburn Police Department, and the Maine Turnpike Authority for their help at the scene.
Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this awful tragedy.
