According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a 41-year-old man from the Washington County town of Harrington lost his life in a Saturday evening crash in Benton.

The press release explains that, at about 9:00 on Saturday night, the Maine State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on the southbound side of I-95 in Benton.  Jed Carpenter, of Harrington, was traveling south when he lost control of his 2006 Ford van.  The vehicle struck the guardrail on the Kennebec River bridge.

The press release goes on to explain:

Carpenter who was not wearing a seatbelt was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on scene. The Interstate was diminished to one lane while crews worked to remove Carpenter’s body from the scene. Carpenter was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this crash.

The Maine State Police were assisted by the Fairfield & Benton Fire-Rescue Department, Fairfield Police Department, Clinton Police Department, and by Dostie’s Towing.

Our thoughts go out to Mr. Caprenter's family and friends during this difficult time.
