Domestic abuse is one of those things that is grossly under reported and a true social travesty shrouded in guilt by many of the victims.

In an effort to bring greater awareness to this violence you may have seen many posters showing up in store front windows all over the Augusta area. I even noticed on on my favorite local pizza joint on Water street in Hallowell.

The poster that was in the window that saw was of Maine's own Governor Janet Mills that read:

“Domestic abuse affects everyone. Years ago, a man I loved threatened my life. Escape from violence is possible.”

A strong statement from the leader of our state. According to report by the SunJournal, you will find the posters in Augusta, Gardiner, and Hallowell, with the faces of local people from all walks of life from the Governor, to teachers, to college students, to Doctors and nurses.

The campaign is called "Finding Our Voices" founded by a photojournalist that also suffered domestic abuse, with the hopes to erase shame, and the stigma that victims face.

Inline with bringing awareness to this campaign, it's important to reiterate that domestic violence is never OK, never acceptable, and can not be justified.

If you or someone you know is suffering, know that there is help available right now. Call the Domestic Violence Crisis & Support line at 866-834-4357.
