Coastal Maine School District Cancels Classes Over Staff Illnesses
After spending over a year dealing with a global pandemic, you would think that the idea of an entire school district being closed would not phase us.
However, it is still kind of a shock when we hear about such things. That's the situation that families in one midcoast community woke up to on Monday morning.
The entire RSU 13 school district, which oversees six schools, including Oceanside High School, was closed on Monday.
According to an article on the WMTW website, the closure was due to a significant amount of staff members being ill. The article explained that, in addition to staff members who were ill, the district is also facing of shortage of staff in the transportation department. The lack of bus drivers made it nearly impossible for the schools to operate.
A post from the district's superintendent seemed to indicate that the common cold and flu had taken their toll on the district's staff.
The post said, in part:
Thank you for your patience and understanding for the unexpected closure of our schools this morning. The cold and flu season has had an impact of staffing, and that along with shortages of available staff in our transportation department, has made operations difficult.
At this point, it appears that school will be back in session on Tuesday. However, the superintendent did say he would notify families if there were a change.
