Police Looking for People Who Did $10,000 in Damage to Former Maine School
Police are looking for the public's help in locating the person (or people) responsible for inflicting thousands of dollars in damage to an Aroostook County school.
According to WABI, over $10,000 in damage was done to a former school building in New Sweden.
The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office says that damage was done to the inside and outside of the building. Damage included broken windows, holes through wooden doors, and destroyed construction materials stored in the building.
It appears that the damage was done over several days. Authorities were first called to the building on May 19, and were called again on the 27.
A representative for the department says that they have some video surveillance of the incidents, and now have a few persons of interest. The representative explained that they are following up on these leads.
If you have any information about the crime, you can call the Aroostook County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-638-8477. You can also text tips to 207.538.8477.
New Sweden is a small town in Aroostook County. The town, which has a population of only 577, is located just north of Caribou.
In 2003, the quiet town got national attention due to an unsavory event that took place at a local church. Members of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church were poisoned when a parishioner added arsenic to the church's coffee. Fifteen people were sickened, and one person, 78-year-old Walter Reid Morrill, died of arsenic poisoning. Several days later, the man who poisoned the congregation took his own life. He had left a note admitting that he added the poison to the coffee but said he only wanted to make people sick. Apparently, he had been disgruntled that an altar table he had donated to the church had not been used.
