Investigators from the Maine State Police are looking into the death of a woman whose body was discovered in Skowhegan earlier this week.

A press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss explains that members of the Skowhegan Police Department were called to a home on West Front Street late Wednesday night.  They had been prompted to visit the home after a 911 call came in just before 11:40 PM reporting a person not breathing.

When officers arrived at 361 West Front Street, they found a woman who had died at the residence.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central was brought in to assist with the investigation.

The woman was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed Thursday.  Detectives and evidence technicians spent much of the day interviewing people and collecting evidence.

Police are not releasing the woman’s identity, or the cause and manner of death, until her identity is confirmed and family members are notified.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities say there is no danger to the public, and more information will be shared when appropriate.

Our thoughts are with all those involved during this difficult time.
