If you have lived in Maine for more than a few minutes, you know that Renys is a 'Maine adventure".

The discount store chain, which got its start in the 1940s, has locations across a wide swath of the state.  The chain, which employs over 500 people, currently has over 16 stores in the state.  There are Renys in Waterville, Bangor, Gardiner, Bath, Belfast, Camden, Dexter, and Farmington, to name just a few.

Additionally, the chain has a warehouse and corporate offices in Newcastle.

There will soon be another Central Maine Renys location.

Renys in Augusta, Maine

According to a recent article on the Maine Biz website, the newest Renys location will be in the Shaw's Plaza on Western Avenue in Augusta.

The article explains that the iconic discount store chain will open a new store in the old Big Lots spot.

Renys is getting ready to bring some serious life to Augusta. The Maine-based retailer says they’re planning to hire 30 to 40 people for their brand-new store.  Yes, there'll be a pile of new jobs created here in Central Maine.   And if all goes according to plan, doors could open as soon as September or October. No official date just yet, but the countdown is on

Renys Location Closing

Despite opening several new stores in the last few years, including Bangor and Waterville, Renys has announced they will soon be closing an underperforming store.

According to Maine Biz, the Renys location in Portland will be closing by the end of the year.

While we do not have specific details, we suspect that the closure has more to do with the cost of doing business in Portland than it has to do with the amount of business the store does.

As for the Augusta location, we'll keep you updated on any opening date announcements.
