Fire Officials Investigate Norway, Maine Apartment Building Fire
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, fire crews were called to a structure fire at 26 Cottage Street in Norway around 9:00 Saturday night, April 25, 2026.
When they arrived, flames were already moving through the front porch and into two first-floor apartments of the roughly 15-unit building, prompting an aggressive response with help from nearby departments. Crews were able to get the fire under control quickly, preventing more extensive damage.
All residents were displaced for the night, though some are expected to return in the coming days. Smoke alarms were working properly and gave early warning, and two tenants were taken to the hospital with injuries but have since been treated and released.
Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office say the fire started on the front porch, where hay, straw, and other combustible materials had been stored underneath. The fire is believed to have been accidentally sparked by improperly discarded smoking materials.
