While we have seen a lot of upheaval of local businesses over the last few years, there has been some good news.

We've seen the revitalization of many former New England mill towns.  Old mill buildings are being converted to stores, restaurants, bars, and even light manufacturing businesses.

We have seen this occur in Manchester, Berlin, Lewiston, Auburn, and even in Augusta.

Now, we are seeing the same thing happen at a notable mill building in Skowhegan, Maine.

According to the KJ, the former Solon Manufacturing and Maine Spinning Co. mill, located on Island Avenue, is in the process of being redeveloped.  The 80,000-square-foot building will open as a mixed-use facility.

One of the notable new tenants will be The Skowhegan, a 20-room boutique hotel.  The hotel is expected to welcome its first guests by the end of April.

While the hotel will take advantage of the mill's aestetics, it will also be very high-tech.  The website explains:

Our tech-enabled rooms offer self check-in at 4pm, 24/7 guest support by text or phone, and a Virtual Front Desk accessed via mobile device.

You can get more details about the hotel's rooms and booking information HERE.

The other major project opening in the next few weeks is The Biergarten, a German restaurant and beer garden.  Originally planned as a space for Bigelow Brewing Company's expansion, the restaurant will now be operated by the owners of the Miller’s Table at Maine Grains in Skowhegan.

The article explains that the building will eventually offer over 40 apartments.  These apartments will vary in size, from a studio, loft-style unit to a three-bedroom/two-bathroom layout.
