This Filmed In Maine Thriller Is A Must See

Flipping through the seeming endless list of free (with subscription, of course) movies on Amazon Prime, I am always on the lookout for movies set in Maine.  Over the weekend, I saw a bunch of trailers for a movie called “Blow the Man Down”.  From the trailer, it looked like it had a “Knives Out” quirkiness to it.  And, it looked like it was set in Maine.

The story follows Mary Beth and Priscilla Connolly, sisters who live in the fictional Maine town of Easter Cove.  Their mother, who ran a fish shop, recently passed away, leaving the sisters with a failing business and a house that is close to foreclosure.  Without giving away too much of the plot, due to a chance meeting at a local bar, one of the sisters ends up with a large chunk of cash.  Throughout the rest of the movie, the sisters need to avoid having the police connect them to a crime while they have to deal with the rightful owner of the stolen cash.

The movie stars newcomers Sophie Lowe and Morgan Saylor as the sisters, but also features a bunch of actors and actresses you’re going to recognize.  The rest of the cast includes Margo Martindale (The Americans, Sneaky Pete, The Riches), Annette O’Toole (Nash Bridges, Halt and Catch Fire), and June Squibb (Sheldon’s Meemaw, Hubie Halloween, NBC’s Good Girls).

There is a good chance you could recognize some of the places in the movie.  It was filmed in Cundy’s Harbor Village in Harpswell, on Orr’s Island, on Bailey Island, in Bath, and at several other locations around that part of Maine’s coast.

One of the great things about the movie is how it (fairly) well portrays life on the Maine coast.  It has the right look, feel, and most importantly, accents.  The actors don’t all have the terrible Maine-ah’ accents that we find in most movies set in the state.  The accents of characters that do have Mainer accents are toned-down and accurate.  There are a few characters that have a Boston accent, but given the amount people who move from Massachusetts to Maine, this makes sense.
