The last few years have not been kind to major retail chains.

While the problems started before the pandemic, we saw the trend of restructuring and closures accelerate in the years since 2020.  As online shopping has become easier, and in many cases faster, we have seen more chains dealing with financial troubles.

One of those retailers is the Walgreens chain of pharmacies.

According to a recent article in USA Today, the company announced in October of 2024 that it was planning to close about 1,200 underperforming stores in order to combat a revenue decline brought about by low drug reimbursement rates and sluggish retail sales.  The number accounts for about a quarter of the brand's 8,500 United States stores.

Reportedly, the plan is to close those stores over the next three years.  This would include about 500 stores closing before the end of the company's current fiscal year, which ends in August of 2025.

It appears that at least one of the stores destined to close is located in Central Maine.

According to an email that went out to customers on Monday, the Walgreens store located on the Memorial Circle rotary in Augusta will close on March 24th, 2025.

The email says, in part:

We're sorry for any disruption this may cause, and we're here to help at our nearby locations and online

If you use Walgreens as your pharmacy, you can get details about getting your medications from another pharmacy or having your medications shipped to you HERE.

Walgreens has several other locations in the Augusta area.  There is a Walgreens on North Belfast Ave in Augusta and Western Avenue in Manchester.

Obviously, we hope that everyone who is losing their job due to this closure will soon find another job.
