If your children are current patients of Augusta Pediatric Dentistry, in the last few days, you probably got an email saying that the office would be closed "untill further notice".  The email contained no indication of the reason for the closure.  Sadly, we now know the reason for the sudden closure.

According to the American Dental Association website, Dr. Jonathan Shenkin (D. D. S.), the man behind the practice, has passed away.

Reportedly, the longtime Central Maine dentist passed away on August 23rd.  No reason has been given for his passing.

In addition to his Augusta practice, Dr. Shenkin was a clinical associate professor of health policy, health services research and pediatric dentistry at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine.

Additionally, he was the vice president American Dental Association from 2013-2015.  Dr. Shenkin was also the past president of the Maine Dental Association and, since 2009, he was an ADA media spokesperson on pediatric dental issues.  In that capacity, he had been interviewed by dozens of media outlets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, NPR, the Associated Press, Parents Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, NBC News, and ABC News.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Shenkin's family and friends in this very difficult time.
