Here’s What We Know About the Closure of Denny’s in Augusta, Maine
Over the last few weeks, many of us had heard rumors that one of the most well-known chain restaurants in Central Maine was going to be closing for good at the end of this month.
Sadly, those rumors were true.
Yesterday, it was confirmed that Denny’s diner on Civic Center Drive in Augusta was going to be closing permanently. Customers who ate at the restaurant on Monday were informed of the impending closure by staffers.
Many regular customers were shocked by how soon the closure would be taking place.
The restaurant’s employees will serve their last meals just before 2 PM on Christmas Eve.
Based on what we have heard about the company over the last few months, this was not completely unexpected.

According to an October 2024 article in Business Insider, the restaurant had announced plans to close at least 150 locations before 2026. At that time, they had not announced which locations would be closing. However, the article did say that the chain planned to close 50 locations in 2024 and an additional 100 locations would be closed in 2025. Those 150 locations account for about ten percent of the chain’s 1,500+ restaurants nationwide.
The closure of the Augusta location, amongst others, comes at a time when we are seeing dramatic shifts in how families are spending their money. Many families are eating out less and less. Instead, they opt to eat at home and only go out for special occasions.
The closure of the Augusta location leaves only two Denny's restaurants in Maine: Bangor and Auburn. Check out a list of all the Denny's locations on the company's website.
Our sympathies are with those who have lost their jobs due to this closure just days before Christmas. Hopefully, everyone will find a new job quickly.
