
Maine Fire Marshal’s Office Investigates Fatal Tuesday Morning Fire
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating an early Tuesday morning fire in Harpswell.
The fire, which claimed the life of one person, happened around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Harpswell Neck Road. Crews from Harpswell Fire were first on scene and found the house fully involved when they arrived.
Firefighters were able to get inside and found one person in the home. That person was pulled from the building and pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say the victim is believed to be 78-year-old Hugh MacFarland, of Harpswell. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
The fire caused heavy damage to the home, especially on the second floor. Investigators are still working to figure out how it started.
Several departments helped at the scene, including Harpswell Neck, West Bath, Orr’s Island, Bailey Island, Cundy’s Harbor, Brunswick, Harpswell Rescue, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
