Maine CDC Warns Parents About Possible “Tainted” Formula

If you are one of the thousands of Maine parents who have been having problems finding baby formula, I have more bad news for you.

According to the KJ, the Maine Centers for Disease Control & Prevention have warned parents to be on the lookout for "tainted" baby formula.

Certain types of formula from Abbott Nutrition have been linked to illnesses in at least four infants.  So far, no children from Maine have been confirmed to have gotten sick from the formula, however, it has been confirmed that some of the questionable formula was shipped to Maine.

The concern stems from a possible Cronobacter contamination.  Cronobacter is a bacteria that has been known to cause severe foodborne illness, primarily in infants. While Cronobacter infections are rare, infections in infants are considered high risk.

It appears that three of the illnesses were caused by Cronobacter.  It is believe that one was caused by Salmonella.  And, it is believed that one infant has died as a result of the formula.

The FDA is asking parents not to use Similac, Alimentum or EleCare formulas if the first two digits of the code are 22 through 37, the code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2, and the expiration date is April 1, 2022, or later. The code is printed on the product packaging near the expiration date.
