Despite the fact that we had a spring of rainy weekends, and have seen several other rainy periods throughout the summer, the conditions here in Maine are still dry.

Very dry.

Because of those dry conditions, the state has been at an increased risk for wildfires for pretty much the entire year.  Even though we love having one final taste of summer, the weather we are currently enjoying is not helping to alleviate fire danger concerns.

As of Monday morning, Weather.com is warning that the majority of the state, including Kennebec County, is at an elevated risk for fires.

The warning, which will be in effect until about 6 PM, explains that the humidity will be low and there is a good chance of gusty winds this afternoon.

The statement, which can he read HERE, goes on to say:

Extra caution should be taken to prevent wildfires. Always consult with fire officials before engaging in any open burning activities and comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Never leave an open fire unattended and always extinguish campfires completely before leaving.

Regardless of where you live, if you are planning to light a fire today (burning leaves, to roast some marshmallows, whatever), make sure you check with your local fire department first.
