Authorities Warning About New Scam Targeting Maine Corporations & Non-Profits
These days, it feels like we are hearing about a new scam every few days.
In most cases, these scams are targeting our older loved ones, but sometimes the scammers step up to attempt to take advantage of local businesses and non-profit organizations.
According to a new WGME article, that is the current scam that the Maine Secretary of State's Office is warning people about involves fake requests for end of year filings.
How does the scam work? Usually, it starts with a letter showing up in your mailbox that looks official and very state-ish. It claims they will file your annual report for you. All it takes is a $210 fee.
Here’s the catch. It is not from the state.
Scammers use publicly available information about your business or nonprofit to make the letter sound legitimate. Names, addresses, and registration details are easy to find. That does not make the offer real.
According to the state, the Division of Corporations does not mail out annual report forms. Ever.
Annual reports are filed online only. And the real cost is far lower. It is $85 for domestic businesses and $35 for nonprofits.
If you get a letter or an email similar to this, it is best to reach out directly to the state. If you ever in doubt about a message's authenticity, always double check.
