According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a man from New Hampshire has been arrested for the killing of an elderly woman that took place back in 1993.

A New Hampshire man has been arrested in connection with a homicide that has remained unsolved for more than three decades.

The Maine State Police announced that 59-year-old Daniel Jolly of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with murder in the 1993 death of 73-year-old Maxine Bitomski of Kittery.

According to investigators, Jolly was taken into custody at approximately 6:13 a.m. in Portsmouth by members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South and the Portsmouth Police Department. He was transported to the Rockingham County Jail, where he will remain pending extradition proceedings to Maine.

The investigation began on January 16, 1993, when Kittery Police responded to Bitomski's home on Colonial Road after family members discovered her dead inside the residence. The Maine State Police joined the investigation shortly afterward.

An autopsy conducted the following day determined that Bitomski's death was a homicide. Authorities are not releasing the cause of death at this time because court documents remain sealed.

Investigators say Jolly knew Bitomski through his work with Medical Market, a Portsmouth-based medical supply company that provided oxygen equipment and services to her before her death.

The case was re-examined in 2021 by detectives with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-South. Authorities say continued investigative work, evidence review, and advances in DNA testing ultimately led to Jolly's arrest.

"This arrest reflects the determination and commitment of investigators who never stopped working this case," said Lt. Tom Pickering, who oversees the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-Unsolved. He credited current and retired detectives, the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory, and the Kittery Police Department for their work over the past 33 years.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information related to Bitomski's death is encouraged to contact Major Crimes Unit Sgt. Justin Huntley at (207) 624-7076, option 9.
