Maine Man Shot By Police After Waiving a Sword During Traffic Stop
According to an article on the WABI website, a man is recovering in the hospital after being shot by police during a traffic stop that turned wild in Calais.
New details have been released following an officer-involved shooting that happened Friday at the intersection of Main Street and North Street in Calais.
According to a press release from Calais Police Chief David Randall, Calais Police Officer Charles Ball and Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Taylor LeBlanc were conducting a traffic stop involving 35-year-old Abinadi White when the incident unfolded.
Police say White was informed that he was under arrest but refused to comply with officers' commands. Authorities say officers attempted to use a Taser, but it was unsuccessful. As they tried to take White into custody, investigators say he grabbed a sword and swung it at the officers.
Both Officer Ball and Deputy LeBlanc then fired their weapons, striking White.
White was taken to Calais Regional Hospital before being flown to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Officials say he is currently in stable condition.
Once released from the hospital, White is expected to face multiple charges, including failure to stop, operating after suspension, failure to submit to arrest or detention, and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
Officer Ball and Deputy LeBlanc have both been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
The Maine Attorney General's Office is conducting an investigation into the use of deadly force.
