Overall, Maine is a safe place to live.

In recent years, we have seen many people from the nation's larger cities moving to Maine because of how safe our corner of New England is.

However, we still have crime in Maine.  Sometimes, sadly, that crime is violent.

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the Maine State Police are investigating a double homicide in the Central Maine town of Chelse.

The press release explains:

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at approximately 8:37 pm, Maine State Police Troopers responded to a residence on Windsor Road in Chelsea. Upon arrival, Troopers located two deceased adult males. Detectives and Evidence Response Technicians with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central responded to investigate and process the scene. The deceased individuals were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

The press release goes on to say that a juvenile male was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. He was taken into custody and transported to Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

*NOTE - All suspects are considered innocent until being found guilty in a court of law

The names of those involved have not been released.

Despite the fact that we have already had several notable killings in Maine in 2025, the murder rate for our state remains one of the lowest in the nation.  According to World Population Review, the 2025 murder rate for Maine is 4.3 per 100,000 residents.  Only Connecticut and North Dakota have lower murder rates.
