I'm a big animal lover. I'm obsessed with my cat. He's awesome. I adopted him from the Kennebec Valley Humane Society. He was the only kitten they had and I knew when I woke up that day that I wasn't leaving without a kitty, so we were meant to be. I love him to death but that doesn't mean if I were to croak at 29 that I would want him buried with me.

A dog owner in Virginia recently passed away and it was in her will that she wanted her Shih Tzu mix, Emma, to be buried alongside her, according to News Center Maine.

The problem was that Emma was happy, healthy, and very much alive when her owner passed. Despite this, she was euthanized and cremated to go in the ground with her owner.

Am I the only one horrified by this?

Kudos to local shelter workers who tried to prevent the executor of the woman's estate from following through with the final wishes.

I don't care how much you love your pet. I don't care if your pet is your only family member. That does not give you the right to kill it just to be dead...together. I fail to see any logic in that.

If you're worried about the well-being of your pet once you pass, that's understandable, but Fido deserves a chance to thrive for his remaining years! Reach out to friends, family, a local shelter. ANYONE. Heck, you can set up a trust for the furry friend if you'd like! Just please, don't end the life of your pet just because yours is over.

The state of Maine does not appear to have any laws on the books specifically regarding this issue, but animals are considered to be personal property, as they are in Virginia. There are laws against pets being buried in cemeteries alongside their humans but there's nothing on record explicitly against it for private property which is how the woman in Virginia was able to be buried with her dog.
