Maine Child Hit By Passing Car While Boarding School Bus

According to an article in the Portland Press Herald, earlier this week, a ten year old boy was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he was hit by a passing vehicle while he was attempting to board a school bus.

The incident reportedly happened by Evans Street and Hill Street in South Portland on Wednesday morning.  The child was hit by a South Portland high school student who was driving and SUV.

The child was taken to Maine Medical Center.

The driver, who had an intermediate license, said she did not see the child or the flashing lights of the school bus.  She has been charged with Passing a Stopped School Bus with Flashing Lights, which is a Class E Offense.

According to the AARP website, the crime carries minimum $250 fine for the first offense.  It also says:

Fortunately, it looks like the child it going to make a complete recovery.

Personally, not much scares me when it comes to driving.  The only time I ever get nervous is when I have to deal with driving around school buses.  I am terrified that something is going to happen to cause me to hit a bus or a child.  Honestly, it is kind of an irrational fear, but I don't think I could live with myself if I caused harm to someone's child.
